Green Key Criteria

Establishments awarded with the Green Key certification meet a set

of high standard environmental requirements. Currently a set of 13 categories and 130 criteria have been developed and applied as

baseline criteria for all countries.

Green Key Recognization

The prestigious eco‐label represents a commitment by establishments

that their businesses will adhere to the strict Green Key criteria set by

the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and recognized by

Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

Green Key Award

The decision regarding the Green Key award is always third-party verified, meaning that an independent jury or a third-party auditor decides whether or not a hotel can be awarded.

EarthCheck Certified is the world’s leading environmental certification and benchmarking program for the travel and tourism industry. It is the culmination of a journey that began in 1987 and continues to this day.

EarthCheck Program

EarthCheck program complies with the Mohonk Agreement, which outlines the guidelines and principles for an International Sustainable Tourism Certification Program. EarthCheck Certified is Accredited by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and has been approved by the CDP.

USGBC LEED

The U.S. Green Building Council is committed to a sustainable, prosperous future through LEED, the leading program for green buildings and communities worldwide. Their mission is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

LEED Rating

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building, community and home project types, LEED provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement.

LEED Points

Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several categories: Location & Transportation, Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation and more. Based on the number of points achieved, a project then earns one of four LEED rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.

Green Seal is a founding member of the Global Ecolabelling Network, the internationally recognized network of ecolabelling organizations. They follow the EPA’s requirements and the procedures have been reviewed by third parties and found to meet the following standards and guidelines.

Green Seal is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to use science-based programs to

empower consumers, purchasers, and companies to create a more sustainable world.

Green Seal offers certification of hotels and accommodations in conformance with its standards.

Green Seal Standard

Green Seal Standard establishes environmental, health, and social requirements for properties that offer

temporary lodging services, which typically include All Suites, Bed and Breakfasts, Hotels, Cottages, Lodges,

Motels, Resorts, and others.

Green Seal Levels

Green Seal Standard has three levels under which a lodging property may apply for certification.

Bronze contains essential leadership elements of a lodging operation. Silver is a more

comprehensive level established for leadership operations. Gold adds additional criteria

characterizing properties that are at the forefront of environmental leadership.

Green Seal Credentials
